The corridor twisted left, then right, then split into three identical passages. Suzume's headlamp flickered across rough stone walls as she tried to remember which way she'd come from.
Because, of course, she'd have to go back that same way.
[Left... no, wait, was it right? Shit.]
Behind her, the angry roars were getting closer. Those monsters wouldn't stay fooled forever.
She picked the middle path and ran. Her forty-kilo pack bounced against her spine with each step, the straps digging into her shoulders. The knife at her thigh slapped against her leg.
Then she heard it. Voices. Human voices.
"—told you we should've taken the other path!"
"Just keep pressure on it! We can't lose you too!"
"Face it, we're dead. We're all dead."
Suzume rounded a corner and saw light ahead. Real light, not the sickly green of dungeon moss. She slowed down, catching her breath before stepping into view.
The sight that greeted her made her stomach drop.
Three Players huddled in a small chamber, backs against the wall. No, wait. Five Players. Two lay motionless on the ground - one in healer's robes, the other in leather armor. Blood pooled beneath them, black in the magical light from someone's staff.
Of the living, one was bleeding badly. A warrior-type clutched his thigh, red seeping between his fingers while an archer tried to bandage it with torn cloth. The third, a mage judging by his staff, stood guard at the chamber entrance.
They all turned when Suzume's headlamp beam hit them.
"What the hell?" The mage raised his staff, then lowered it, confusion replacing fear. "You're... you're not a Player. I can't see your level."
"Who are you!?" The archer's eyes were wild. "What are you doing here!?"
Suzume ignored the questions and dropped her pack, already digging through it.
"How deep is the leg wound?"
"I... what?"
"The wound. Femoral artery or just muscle?" She pulled out her medical kit. "Answer matters."
"It's... I think it missed the big artery. He's bleeding but not spurting."
"Good. That's good." Suzume pushed past them to the injured warrior. His face was pale, sweat beading on his forehead. "Hey. What's your name?"
"Jin..."
"Okay Jin. This is going to hurt, but I need to see." She gently moved his hands aside. The gash was deep but the archer was right - no arterial spray. "You got lucky. Half an inch to the left and you'd be with them." She nodded toward the bodies.
"H-How do you know all this?" The mage stepped closer. "You're just a civilian!"
"MeTube University. Now less talking, more helping. Archer, keep pressure here while I prep the bandages. Mage, how much mana do you have left?"
"Maybe... maybe enough for three more spells?"
"Save them. We'll need them soon."
She worked quickly, cleaning the wound with antiseptic that made Jin hiss through his teeth. The archer, a woman about Suzume's age, watched with wide eyes.
"You came here alone? Without powers?"
"Yeah, well. Someone had to." Suzume wrapped the bandage tight. "Your healer...?"
"First one down," the archer whispered. "Shadow Wolf got her throat before she could cast anything. Then Benji tried to tank without heals and..." She looked at the other body.
[No wonder they're falling apart. Tank and healer gone, in the blink of an eye.]

"This is insane," Jin muttered through gritted teeth. "Civilians can't enter dungeons. How are you even here?"
"Same way you are. Walked through the portal." Suzume tied off the bandage and checked his pulse. Rapid but strong. "Can you stand?"
"Maybe with help, but where would we go? The portal sealed behind us."
A roar echoed through the chamber. Close. Too close.
Everyone froze.
"They found us," the mage whispered.
Suzume's mind raced.
Most dungeons like these actually had two exits. The way she'd come was one of them, but there had to be another passage leading deeper.
Neither option looked promising, but with those monsters rapidly collapsing on their position...
"Okay. We go deeper, find a defensive position-"
Shadows poured through the entrance.
Not one or two monsters. A dozen at least. Shadow Wolves with eyes like burning coals. A Stone Golem that had to duck to fit through the doorway. And things with hundreds of teeth that chittered and clicked.
"F-Formation!" Jin tried to stand, grabbing his sword.
"You can barely walk!" The archer nocked an arrow. "Shin, we need those spells now!"
The mage, Shin, raised his staff, light gathering at the tip.
"Three shots. That's all I've got."
Suzume pressed herself against the wall, pulling Jin back down. She couldn't fight. Couldn't help. She could only watch as death approached.
The archer fired first, arrow taking a Shadow Wolf in the eye. It dissolved, but three more took its place.
Shin's spell lit up the chamber, a lance of pure fire that punched through another wolf. But the Stone Golem kept coming, each step shaking the ground.
Suzume's eyes widened.
[They're going to die. We're all going to die.]
The archer reached for another arrow and found her quiver empty.
"I'm out!"
A wolf slipped past their defenses, jaws snapping. Shin jumped back, wasting his second spell on a panicked shot that hit the ceiling.
"One left!" He backed against the wall. "Just one spell left!"
The golem raised a massive fist. The archer threw her bow at it uselessly.
"No!" Suzume found herself moving before she could think. She grabbed a flare from her belt and struck it, red light exploding in the darkness.
The monsters hesitated, confused by the sudden brightness. But only for a second.
More poured in. The chamber was filling with death.
[I need to do something. Anything!]
Jin tried to stand again, dragging his injured leg.
"Get behind me! I can still-"
A wolf lunged. He raised his sword but his leg gave out. He fell, and the wolf's jaws opened wide.
[No, no, NO! I came here to save people!]
Suzume threw herself forward, shoving Jin aside. The wolf's teeth snapped shut on empty air.
"ARE YOU INSANE!?" Shin screamed.
Maybe. But she couldn't watch them die. Not when she'd come so far.
The wolf turned on her, growling. She fumbled for her knife but that was more moral support than anything else.
[Please. I can't fight but I can't let them die. Please!]
The wolf lunged.
[PLEASE LET ME SAVE THEM!]
Something inside her snapped.
Like a key finding its lock.
The world exploded with information.

[Class Designation: Rescuer]
[A unique support class focused on life preservation, utility, and extraction]
Words filled her vision, but she was already moving. Power flooded her limbs, strange and electric.
She could see everything now. The Shadow Wolves, Level 41, weak to light. The Stone Golem, Level 48, with vulnerable joints. The wounded Players, HP bars hovering overhead, all critically low.
But more than that, she could see paths. Golden threads only visible to her, marking safe routes through the chaos.
Her hands moved without thought. A glowing rope materialized from her palm and shot forward twenty meters, wrapping around Jin's waist.
[Skill Activated: Rescue Line]
[Range: 20m | Cost: 5 MP | Pulls target to user's location]
The rope contracted instantly, yanking him away just as wolf teeth snapped shut where he'd been.
Another gesture and a translucent barrier appeared between the archer and an approaching wolf. The creature slammed into it with a crack.
[Skill Activated: Guardian Light]
[Duration: 10 seconds | Cost: 10 MP | Cooldown: 30 seconds | Blocks physical damage up to 150 HP]
"What's happening!?" Shin stared at her. "You're awakening NOW!?"
"Less talking, more running!" Suzume grabbed his arm. "I can see the way out!"
"But the portal-"
"Not that way! There's another path! Trust me!"
Golden threads appeared in her vision, marking a route through the monsters. Only she could see them, paths that showed exactly where enemies wouldn't be in the next five seconds.
[Skill Activated: Escape Route]
[Duration: 30 seconds | Cost: 15 MP | Reveals optimal path to safety]
"Everyone stay close! Move when I move!"
She darted forward, pulling Jin despite his protests. Her barrier flashed into existence, blocking the golem's swing. Another rope caught the archer as a wolf lunged for her back.
"How are you doing this!?" The archer gasped.
"No idea! But it's working!"
They burst through the monster horde, following paths only she could see. The creatures roared frustration as their prey slipped away.
Into the corridor. Deeper into the dungeon.
"This is insane!" Shin panted. "We're going the wrong way!"
"No. This is right." Suzume could feel it in her bones. The golden thread pulled her forward. "My power... it shows me how to save people. And right now, it's showing me this way."

Behind them, monsters howled. But Suzume ran on, pulling her rescued Players along, following the golden thread toward something.
Toward hope.
She'd awakened. Not as a warrior or mage or healer.
As exactly what she'd trained to be.
A rescuer.
