The Variable

  CHAPTER 20 — THE VARIABLE

  Paris had bent fate.

Now fate was coming to confront him.

The golden streak in the sky grew brighter with every passing second.

People on the street began to notice.

  Phones lifted.

  Someone pointed upward.

  “Is that a meteor?”

  Paris knew better.

His phone buzzed violently in his hand.

The divine chat exploded with activity.

  [Thunder Sovereign]: Descent vector stable.

[Goddess of Fate]: Causal anchors engaged.

  [Blood Saint]: Manifestation imminent.

Paris stared at the glowing line cutting across the sky.

  “They’re actually doing it.”

A god was coming to Earth.

  Another message appeared.

[Abyssal Observer]: The variable remains at the convergence point.

  Paris glanced around the street.

  People continued walking.

  Cars moved normally.

No one else understood what was happening.

  But he could feel it.

  The air was growing heavy.

  Charged.

As if reality itself were preparing for something impossible.

  His phone buzzed again.

[Goddess of Fate]: Probability distortions increasing.

[Blood Saint]: The variable destabilizes manifestation conditions.

  Paris frowned.

  “Wait… what?”

  Another message appeared.

[Thunder Sovereign]: The anomaly interferes with the descent.

  Paris looked up again.

  The golden streak flickered slightly.

  Like static passing through light.

  Another message appeared.

  [Abyssal Observer]: Causality resisting alignment.

  Paris whispered quietly.

  “That’s me.”

His presence was bending the probability of the god’s arrival.

The same way it had bent lightning.

The same way it had bent the train derailment.

The same way it had bent every disaster around him.

  Another message appeared.

[Goddess of Fate]: Manifestation probability decreasing.

  [Blood Saint]: Structural interference detected.

  Paris exhaled slowly.

“You can’t even land near me.”

The golden streak in the sky slowed.

  Not physically.

  Conceptually.

As if reality itself refused to allow it to complete its descent.

  The chat continued.

  [Thunder Sovereign]: Stabilize the convergence.

  [Goddess of Fate]: Attempting correction.

  The golden streak brightened again.

  Then—

  It flickered violently.

Paris felt a pulse pass through the air.

  A deep vibration beneath reality.

  The hum.

The same hum he had felt beneath the lattice.

  His phone buzzed again.

  [Abyssal Observer]: Sub-structural pressure rising.

  Paris’s stomach dropped.

  “Oh no.”

  Another message appeared.

[Blood Saint]: The second anomaly reacts to the descent.

Paris looked down at the ground.

  For a brief moment—

The pavement beneath his feet shimmered.

  Just slightly.

Like glass reflecting something deep below.

  The remnant.

It had felt the god descending.

  And it didn’t like it.

  Another message appeared.

[Goddess of Fate]: Lattice strain increasing.

  [Thunder Sovereign]: Maintain the descent.

But the golden streak flickered again.

  Harder this time.

The sky above the city warped faintly.

Reality was being pulled in two directions.

  From above—

  The gods descending.

  From below—

  The remnant pushing upward.

And Paris stood exactly in the middle.

  The chat exploded with warnings.

  [Blood Saint]: Convergence instability.

[Goddess of Fate]: Probability collapse imminent.

[Abyssal Observer]: The variable amplifies both anomalies.

  Paris whispered softly.

  “Great.”

  Another message appeared.

  Paris clenched his jaw.

  “You keep saying that.”

The golden streak in the sky slowed further.

  Almost stopping.

As if the universe itself had reached a stalemate.

  Then—

  The final message appeared.

From the name that had started everything.

  [The Architect]: Timeline distortion confirmed.

  Paris stared at the screen.

  Another line appeared beneath it.

[The Architect]: A variable has emerged.

The golden streak in the sky vanished instantly.

The pressure in the air disappeared.

The hum beneath the world quieted again.

  The street returned to normal.

  People lowered their phones.

  Cars continued moving.

No one else understood what had just happened.

  But Paris did.

The gods had tried to descend.

  The remnant had pushed back.

  And the Architect had intervened.

His phone buzzed one final time.

  A final message appeared.

  [The Architect]: Observation continues.

Paris looked up at the calm sky.

The word echoed in his mind.

  Variable.

  Not anomaly.

  Not error.

  Something new.

Something the system had never accounted for.

And somewhere deep beneath the lattice—

Something ancient had just recognized him too.

Because the next collapse of reality might not start from above.

  It might start with him.
