Chapter 41 — The Strain

The café was bustling, filled with the low hum of conversations, clinking cups, and the occasional hiss of the espresso machine.

Sofia had insisted they take a small outing, a quiet place where Ethan could try to reconnect with the outside world. But as soon as they stepped inside, the noise, the movement, the unpredictability of strangers became overwhelming.

Ethan’s hands gripped the table edge, knuckles white. His eyes darted around, scanning every corner. Every loud laugh, every sudden movement, every raised voice made him flinch.

  “I… I can’t,” he whispered, voice tight. “I thought I could handle this, but I can’t. It’s… too much.”

Sofia reached across the table, placing her hand over his. “I know it’s hard. But you’re not alone. We can leave if you want, or we can stay a little longer, together. Step by step.”

He shook his head, frustration flashing in his eyes. “No! I can’t even talk to people. I can’t order. I… I feel like a burden. And I hate that you keep trying to make me do this.”

“You’re not a burden,” Sofia said softly, squeezing his hand. “You’re learning to survive again. And I’m here. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to try.”

But Ethan’s panic flared again, subtle at first—a tightness in his chest, shallow breaths—but escalating quickly. A child’s sudden laugh near their table made him recoil. He stood abruptly, knocking his chair back.

  “I… I can’t! I can’t! I’m useless!”

Sofia stood quickly, following him, placing her hands on his shoulders. “No! Ethan, look at me! You’re not useless. You’re not broken. You’re here. You’re alive. And I’m right here!”

He shook his head violently, backing toward the door. “I ruin everything! Everyone I care about! You’ll see… you’ll leave!”

Sofia’s heart raced. This wasn’t just panic—it was fear, guilt, and self-loathing combined, spilling into the outside world where she couldn’t protect him from everyone else’s eyes.

“Ethan,” she said firmly, her voice strong despite the fear twisting in her chest, “listen to me. You’re not going to push me away. You’re not going to ruin everything. You’re having a moment, yes—but you’re not alone. And I will not leave you, no matter what. Step by step. We handle this together.”

His breathing was ragged, his body trembling. “I… I feel like I’m losing control. I don’t even know who I am outside that room. I… I hate this about myself.”

“You’re Ethan,” she said, pressing her forehead to his. “Not the PTSD, not the panic, not the fear. You’re still him. And I love him. And I’ll love him through all of this.”

He closed his eyes, leaning into her hands, shaking violently as she whispered reassurance after reassurance. Every grounding technique, every mantra, every gentle word was a lifeline.

When the tremors finally slowed, he sank into a chair, exhausted. “I… I’m sorry. I can’t… I don’t know if I can ever be normal.”

Sofia knelt beside him, holding his hand. “You don’t have to be normal. You just have to survive. And I’ll survive it with you. This is the reality we’re facing, Ethan. It’s not easy. And yes, it’s going to be hard sometimes—but we face it together.”

He exhaled shakily, the fear still lingering, but a faint trace of trust returning. “Step by step… again.”

“Yes,” Sofia said softly. “Step by step. And I won’t leave. Not now, not ever.”

But deep down, she knew this was only the beginning. The outside world—friends, strangers, obligations—would continue to test him, test them, and test her limits as a partner.

Love was anchoring them—but it couldn’t erase the fractures.

It could only help them survive… if they were strong enough to endure.
