The Haze of Fear

The Totem Bck Snake's trouble, had arrived

The haze grew thicker and soon covered the entire Skyscraping Snake. It slowly formed the shape of a snake connecting the ground to the clouds. It showed no sign of dissipating after a prolonged period...

As the wind blew in from the West Lake, the snake-shaped haze finally began to disappear, blowing away slowly. During the process, the people could no longer see the astonishing figure of the Skyscraping Snake.

As a matter of fact, the beast had already left by the time the haze wrapped around its body. However, the people still assumed that it was still there, since a slight movement from it was enough to bulldoze the streets.

To everyone’s surprise, it had disappeared into thin air, just like that. It did not destroy a single building, nor did it utter a single cry. Nothing was left apart from the disappearing haze between the silver skyscraper and the five-starred hotel... Oh, that wasn’t true. It did leave a haze of fear covering the whole of Hangzhou.

  ——

Inside the restaurant, Mo Fan’s bck shirt was already soaked with sweat. After confirming that the towering snake had left, Mo Fan could feel his limbs becoming weak.

Frankly speaking, he would rather believe he was having a nightmare, as such an unbelievable scene could only take pce in dreams!

The only problem was, that alone was not enough to expin the fear that felt so real, which had resulted in him being soaked wet with cold sweat.

“Brother...Mo Fan.” Xinxia opened her eyes and could only see Mo Fan’s back. The soaked shirt was sticking to his back.

Mo Fan was standing still. His body subconsciously shivered tremendously as he took in more breaths.

Hearing Xinxia’s call, Mo Fan tried his best to calm his thoughts and forced a smile, “Everything... everything is alright now.”

“Did it disappear?” asked Xinxia in an intimidated tone.

  “I think so.”

“Do you know what it was?” she asked in a weak voice.

Mo Fan shook his head. He slowly took out his phone and browsed the Internet...

As he thought, the news soon spread widely. The topic of the Skyscraping Snake in Hangzhou City exploded on every social ptform!

“The government will give us an expnation... Either way, let’s...let’s leave this pce first,” said Mo Fan.

  “Mmm...” Xinxia nodded.

  ——

The district that was rather peaceful a few moments ago was in a total mess filled with horns, screams and cries...

The people were still running away. No one knew if the snake were going to appear again. Everyone was trying their best to leave the nd of nightmare.

Mo Fan could not care less about the ws. He Summoned the Swift Star Wolf and quickly left the area.

He did not want to say a single word, nor was he in the mood to care about the discussions happening on the Internet. He solely wanted to bring Xinxia somewhere safe.

Mo Fan had no idea what would happen after this. He completely lost his curiosity due to fear.

He only wished that the thing would never appear in front of him, ever again!

  ——

“People of Hangzhou, do not be afraid. It’s only a beast shadow that has been invented quite recently. The snake isn’t real at all. It’s only an illusion, which is the reason why it was able to appear and vanish without any sign. If it were a true demon beast, its size alone would bring utter destruction to the city!”

In less than an hour, the official party had commented on the shocking incident.

“So it was only an illusion, they said it was made of mist, but it looked so real.”

“Yeah, the eyes were like a pair of spotlights. I was more than ten streets away, but it felt like that thing was right in front of me.”

“There’s no way that’s an illusion. They are hiding something. I was right in the hotel when it happened. I could clearly see its head from my angle. It’s definitely not some illusion made of some magic!”

  ——

Within a day, the people of the entire nation had their eyes on the astonishing news. Many people who were present when the incident took pce accused the government of hiding something.

However, just like every other epic incident, it would slowly be forgotten when there was no news following it up, as the people’s attention was grabbed by other incidents happening across the nation.

On the second day, the people were still listing the evidence on the Internet, demanding the official party give an expnation.

On the third day, most of the people were leaning towards believing the official statement. No matter how real the Skyscraping Snake looked, no one could expin how it appeared and vanished like a piece of cloud.

The demon beasts were savage in nature. If such a towering beast actually appeared, the whole district would be in ruins.

A week ter, fewer people were discussing the topic. The public had shifted their attention to the new species of demon beast that had appeared along the coast...

  ——

Mo Fan had stayed at Hangzhou during the week. It took a whole week for the haze of fear in his heart to clear up.

An illusion? Some sort of formation constructed with the Shadow Element?

As a Magician who had spent quite some time surviving in the wild, Mo Fan could guarantee with everything he had as a man that it was definitely not just an illusion!

The Skyscraping Snake was real, and Mo Fan had a strong feeling that it would show itself again!

Mo Fan spent most of his time in the apartment that he had rented. He could not even focus on his cultivation. Every time he closed his eyes, his mind would be filled with the giant face of the snake and its deadly, cold eyes!

  What exactly was it?

No government in this world would try to hide information about a demon beast. Why would the officials cim it was an illusion in their statement?

How did such a gigantic snake appear in the middle of the busiest streets, and disappear without causing any destruction?...

What category would the beast belong to?! It was definitely not Commander-level! Mo Fan had seen quite a number of Commander-level demon beasts, and yet he had never been so terrified by one before.

  —

Mo Fan did not want anything to do with the snake. However, he realized that he could not focus on his cultivation after seeing it. He could not help but feel uneasy if the doubts and fear continued to occupy his mind.

“I guess there’s someone I can ask if I want to learn more about it.”

Mo Fan made up his mind. He wanted to at least know what it was, and found out what it had done to him, to make his mind overwhelmed with fear whenever he closed his eyes.

“Miss Tangyue, are you free? I’m in Hangzhou,” said Mo Fan.

“What the hell are you doing there instead of resting in the army?” Tangyue scolded him.

“I’m well-rested. Actually, I’ve been in Hangzhou since a week ago...” said Mo Fan.

Tangyue paused for a moment, before asking in a solemn tone, “Did you see it?”

  “Yes.”

  “Come to my pce.”

“I’m quite scared to go closer to the West Lake area now...”

“Hah!~” Tangyue uttered a pleasant giggle before asking with a hint of mockery, “Even a guy as fearless as you feels scared for once?”

it was normal for the Totem Bck Snake to appear during this sensitive period. But its appearance naturally caused unnecessary trouble. Zhu Meng, a councilor from the Court Mage Association, even directly targeted it.

In fact, Zhu Meng had been eyeing this Totem Bck Snake for a long time.

Just as Mo Fan arrived in Hangzhou, Teacher Tang Yue brought him to the Magic Association in Hangzhou.

They took the elevator all the way to the top floor of the building, where there was a full panoramic conference hall with an impressive style.

As they approached the entrance of the conference room, a group of uniformed men stood guard. Almost all of these men were High-Level Mages.

They didn't wait long before Teacher Tang Yue's senior brother led them inside.

The conference room had a standard rge round table, with about seven or eight well-dressed men and women seated around it.

The remaining twenty-odd people all stood to the side; judging by their uniforms, they were mostly members of the Judgment Association.

Those guarding outside had already reached High-Level Mage strength, so those inside naturally wouldn't be any worse. Here, Mo Fan also saw Leng Qing, the Vice President of the Demon City Judgment Association.

However, the Demon City Judgment Association was also under the management of the Lingyin Temple Judgment Association. So she was also considered part of the Tang family's faction.

At this moment, a middle-aged man with a thick beard at the conference table smmed his hand down, righteously decring, "People have died, and you are still protecting that venomous snake! I came from the Magic Court this time not to negotiate with you, but to eliminate the hidden danger in West Lake by order and bring peace back to Hangzhou. You'd better hand over the Sky Serpent as soon as possible for us to deal with!"

Teacher Tang Yue gred at the thick-bearded man with anger in her eyes, muttering curses under her breath.

Clearly, in Teacher Tang Yue's view, Zhu Meng, who was targeting the Totem Bck Snake, was a bad person.

"Calm down, calm down, Councilor Zhu Meng, you know the Sky Serpent's abilities. Going after it with such murderous intent will only cause greater trouble. Everything needs to be resolved slowly," an elder judge said with a smile.

"Don't say so much useless stuff. This time, you can't protect it anymore!" Zhu Meng said very forcefully.

"Protect? Why should we protect it? The Totem Bck Snake has been in this city for countless years; this is its natural habitat. I truly don't understand what right we have to drive it away?" an elder, clearly holding a stance of protecting the totem, said indignantly.

"That's your totem; what does it have to do with us? What I care about is whether this demon will cause widespread chaos!" Zhu Meng said, his momentum undiminished.

"I don't think you're worried about the Totem Bck Snake causing chaos. Rather, you're worried that as long as it exists, your hidden danger strategy can't be fully implemented, you can't gain more supporters, and you can't become the President of the Magic Court!" the old totem guardian retorted angrily.

Zhu Meng looked at the old man with the goatee, and instead of getting angry, he smiled.

Mo Fan watched quietly from the side. He had to admit, those who pyed power games were truly actors!

Just then, Teacher Tang Yue couldn't help but stand up and say, "The Totem Bck Snake won't harm people. How can you cim those two corpses were caused by the Totem Bck Snake?"

"Where did this ill-mannered girl come from? Is this your pce to speak!" a court guard next to Zhu Meng shouted loudly.

Zhu Meng, however, gnced at Teacher Tang Yue, seemingly recognizing her. He waved his hand, signaling the guard captain beside him not to worry about such an understanding issue.

"Everything needs evidence. Just dragging out two corpses and saying the Totem Bck Snake killed them, don't you think that's ridiculous!" Teacher Tang Yue continued to retort angrily.

"Teacher Tang Yue, don't be rude, step down."

Judge Tang Zhong stood up and, after a rebuke, looked at Zhu Meng and said, "My niece is not wrong; everything needs evidence. With our totem's ability, if it really wanted to kill someone, it wouldn't even leave a body. Why would it inexplicably leave two rotten corpses that were only discovered a week ter? To pin the bme for these two corpses on our totem is simply too much!"

Zhu Meng looked at Tang Zhong, but his attitude was extremely firm: "Investigating cases is not my business; my duty is to eliminate hidden dangers. Its public appearance in the bustling city is enough to list it as a primary hidden danger. Now I only give you two days: either you hand over the Totem Bck Snake yourselves, or I will personally take action!"

With that, Zhu Meng turned and left directly.

"As, I never thought that despite our careful protection, it would still be caught with a handle," Tang Zhong sighed, looking incredibly mencholic.

"What should we do now? Zhu Meng is determined to deal with the totem this time, and he has reason on his side. Even if we appeal to a higher council, it probably won't calm down," Hei Yu said.

"Actually, Zhu Meng is just putting on a show for a while. If he wants to deal with the totem, let him deal with it. If he really had the ability to defeat the Totem Bck Snake, he would have done it long ago; why wait until today...? Isn't it because he fears the totem's strength?" Councilor Luo Mian said, stroking his beard.

Luo Mian clearly also knew about the Totem Bck Snake's shedding, and the reason he said this was simply to reconfirm it.

Tang Zhong was also very helpless and expined about the Totem Bck Snake's ten-year shedding cycle.

Then Tang Zhong looked at Teacher Tang Yue and said, "Teacher Tang Yue, I think you need to take the totem away from here in advance and find a safe pce for it to safely pass its shedding period."

Teacher Tang Yue nodded in agreement.

She naturally didn't want anything to happen to the Totem Bck Snake.

After all, to her, the Totem Bck Snake was like family!

"I'll be responsible for protecting Teacher Tang Yue and the totem," Hei Yu said.

Judge Tang Zhong shook his head and said, "The totem during its shedding period is very sensitive. Any Commander Level creature or High-Level Mage among humans appearing within twenty kilometers of it will provoke its hostility. Teacher Tang Yue is the only one whose strength exceeds this limit and will not be regarded as an enemy by the totem."
