Chapter 7: Civilization

The next morning, I was woken up by Caelen and Mira bright and early so we could head out to the doctor's office. After waking up, I noticed that my hand was actually feeling much better. I figured it must've been because of the sleep, coupled with Caelen's healing magic. My hand wasn't fixed completely, however, as I could still feel some pain if I moved it in the wrong way.

After getting ready and having a quick breakfast together, we all left the house and began to set out for our destination. To my annoyance, Liora had tagged along as she seemingly had nothing better to do. That, or they just didn't want to leave an eight-year-old girl home alone.

I honestly didn't have a clue where the pace would be located. There weren't any buildings around the property, and only grass and trees could be seen far out. Though I was still interested and a bit excited to find out where it was.

Come to think of it, this is the first time I’ve left the property since my birth here.

In the three years that I had been in this world, I had never once left this area. In fact, I hadn't spoken to anyone besides Caelen, Mira, and Liora. Though I figured that was probably for the best, I didn't like speaking to people much anyway. Also, the less I had to interact with the people of this world, the better. Though I was slightly interested in the world itself, I had no intention of becoming acquainted with its people.

We started walking down a dirt path as we left the property, one that led to who knows where. To our sides was grass and trees. Birds could be heard chirping and playing around, and squirrel-looking things would appear every once in a while. I say squirrel-looking things because they looked similar to squirrels on Earth, but with four eyes instead of two.

I sat atop Mira's shoulders while Caelen and Liora walked on either side of her. I was annoyed at the fact that Mira felt the need to carry me as if I were some sort of child. I would have much preferred to walk there myself. In fact, I would've preferred to go to this appointment entirely on my own. Though it probably would've been pretty strange for a three-year-old to set and attend his own doctor's appointment on his own.

After a decent bit of walking, I finally began to see some semblance of civilization in the distance. From that distance, though, I could only make out that there were buildings and people. We still had a long way to go, but the fact that our journey was almost over relieved me. The whole walk, Caelen, Liora, and Mira were talking nonstop. At first, Liora would go on and on about her friends. Then, Caelen would talk about a new crop he’d been working on growing. After that, Mira would begin discussing what the next phase of Liora's training would be.

This was the only part that irritated me. After all, it helps to know the plans of your enemies. I listened in as Mira explained to Liora that after our outing, they would continue where they left off. Apparently, Mira had taken off from work so that she could attend the doctor's visit with me. This meant that she and Liora had the entire day to train after we were done. I still had no idea what she did for work, and honestly, I didn't care.

Mira explained that Liora would continue her breathing exercises and practice gathering mana. She also said that maybe, if Liora did well, they would practice a bit of mana manipulation. She added that, after all, it was only her second day of training. Liora would need to start small and stick with what she could handle.

I grinned to myself at the fact that this little girl, who was older than me, was still stuck on the basics when I had mastered them in one night. I had even learned how to augment my body and enhance my strength all by myself at the ripe age of three. I pitied her. It must’ve sucked to be so untalented.

I guess not everyone can be as talented as me.

As I was enjoying my superiority, my thoughts were interrupted by Caelen glancing at me. “Youve been awfully quiet, Reyly. What are you grinning about?”

I quickly fixed my face and turned my gaze towards the ground, moving my eyes away from him and not responding.

"Ah, I see, you're still embarrassed about messing up your hand. And now that your sister is making such good progress in her training, it's making you feel bad.” Caelen guessed. He was completely off the mark, and my brows furrowed.

How could he think for even a second that I'd feel bad about how skilled Liora was? She couldn't even augment her body. And what did he mean by her training was “going well”? If anything, he should've been praising me for how well I had done last night.

“Ha Ha, You're jealous.” Liora teased as she looked at me with a proud grin.

My face reddened, and I turned my gaze away from the ground and towards her, brows furrowed in anger. “A-As if! I’ll have you know that I'm actually more talented than you! I can control mana, and I'm only three! So you should be jealous of me!”

“You didn’t control it at all! That's the reason why we’re going to the doctors in the first place, stupid!” Liora shot back at me as she stuck her tongue out.

“I'm not stupid, you're stupid!” I shouted back, infuriated.

  “Am not!” Lora shouted back

“Stupid!!” I shouted back even louder

“Knock it off, you two! You’re giving me a headache.” Mira cut in.

The two of us stopped arguing immediately. Even though I was still pissed at Liora, and she was pissed at me, we weren't about to risk getting disciplined by Mira. So instead, we settled for glaring at each other for the rest of the walk.

As we were in the middle of our glaring, Caelen interrupted our silent feud. “Relax, you two. Look, we’re here.”

Liora and I looked away from each other. We had been so caught up in our feud that we hadn't even bothered to look at our surroundings. We had finally made it to civilization. We had arrived at what appeared to be some kind of town, or more like a village.

Reading the sign at the entrance, I learned the village was named Lenosha Village. As we entered the village, I took in my surroundings. There were buildings spread throughout. Most of them were wood, just like Caelen and Mira's home. Some looked to be houses, while others were buildings with signs outside saying what they were. There was a general store, a tavern, and even an actual blacksmith.

People were walking throughout the village and going about their days. At one home, there was a man on his porch smoking. At another, there were a couple of kids playing together. At the blacksmith's shop, a grizzled-looking man was hitting a sword with a hammer on a stone.

With all the people around, it made me sort of uncomfortable. I was never really the type to like being surrounded by so many people, unless I was drunk or high, of course. But getting high wasn't an option now, so instead settled for staring at the ground and avoiding eye contact. After all, who knew what these people were like? For all I knew, they could be just like Mira or Liora but worse.

We continued through the village until we stopped in front of a modest-looking building. I took my gaze away from the ground and looked at the sign out front. The sign read “Clinic,” so I knew that we had reached our destination.

Caelen entered first, and the rest of us followed. Looking around, the place was a mess and looked nothing like how I figured a clinic should look. On earth, I had never actually been to a real clinic. I had a doctor on payroll who would always make house calls, but I would've thought that a doctor's office would at least be more…tidy.

Wooden chairs were sitting against the wall, which were presumably for guests to sit and wait. There was also a large table in the center of the room. On another wall were multiple large shelves. One was full of books, and the other had devices that I had no idea what they were, along with multiple vials and bottles filled with unknown liquids. To another wall, there was a desk right under the window where the light shone in.

The desk had multiple open books spread about, and an open, empty vial sat atop it, too. Sitting in the chair at the desk was a person. They were wearing a lab coat and were sitting with their head on the desk, with it lying on their arms. They looked like they were sleeping. Their head was turned away from us, and their long blonde hair spread across the desk.

Caelen, Liora, Mira, and I stood in the room for a moment, confused about what to do, before Caelen decided to take initiative. He walked over to the deck of the passed-out doctor and tapped their shoulder. The Doctor began to stir and turned their head, facing Caelen. She had a pretty face with soft, youthful features, but what stood out to me was her ears. Poking through her golden blonde hair were long, pointy ears.

  Is she some kind of…elf?

“Excuse me, are you Lyra Elasha? My name is Caelen Pinekeep, and I was wondering if you could check out my son's injury.”

The elven woman slowly opened her eyes and glanced up at Caelen, who had an awkward look on his face. Then, suddenly, the woman jolted and sat up, resting her chin on her hand, while looking at Caelen with infatuated eyes and a seductive grin.

“Well, hello, handsome. What can I do for you on this fine morning?”
