Kaiden woke up to the hum of the ceiling fan and a dull, a throbbing ache in the back of his head. His mouth was dry. His arms felt heavy. For a second, he thought the game was still running, but the glowing VR set beside him on Emir’s desk said otherwise.
He blinked at the room. He was still alone and only three hours had passed.
A rush of dizziness hit as he sat up. He leaned forward, breathing carefully. The familiar scent of lemon cleaner and faint incense reminded him he was back in the real world. But his heart was still hammering like he’d sprinted a mile.
Overflow.
He’d used it before, but this time, all of it. And now his body felt like it had been hollowed out and barely felt put back together.
He plugged in his phone. Notifications poured in: two texts from his mom checking in, a missed call from his dad, and a vague message from his sister’s attending nurse. Nothing urgent, just keeping him up to date.
He replied to his mom, just a quick “All good at a friend's place. I applied for a job to keep my head on straight. Love you. I'll be home at a decent hour."
Still, the way she’d said “you look like a ghost” last time they spoke, things didn't end on a good note. He hated being disrespectful to his parents; they were just looking out for him, no matter how it seemed. They deserved some kind of grace.
He let out a breath, rolled his shoulders, and stood up slowly. The tension was still there, but he was already adapting to it. Maybe this was the cost of using the Photosphere. And just maybe, if he kept using it, he'd grow stronger. Resistant to it.
For now, he had to log back in. Naō was probably worried, and Ironstride said she was following a lead.
He slid the headset back on.
[Logging into Revolt the Sun…]
[Welcome Back, Nyte]
Location: Ashglass Solarium - Inn Safe Zone
Kaiden’s vision pulled back into focus inside Ashglass, a last outside save. His party window came to life.
[Party Active: Nyte | Naō (online)]
[Ironstride (offline)]
Liri stood quietly by the inn room window, bathed in soft blue glow. She wasn't moving much, but the follower icon over her head read:
[Temporary Familiar: Liri (Combat-Passive)]
Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.
[Status Effect: Bloomlink Active – Photosphere Synergy Boost +12%]
Naō was crouched nearby, sorting vials into his pouch.
“Welcome back,” he said without looking up. “You face-planted pretty hard. Must’ve been hell on your end.”
“I’m fine. Mostly.” Kaiden stretched his neck. “Overflow mode is pretty brutal. But I think I can handle it better next time.”
A Registered notification ping brought him to look at his quest log:
[Main Questline: Collapse of Day Updated]
Objective: Investigate Dimming Regions. Unstable Zones Detected
A secondary ping hit his quest log:
[Quest Progression Completed: Karma Farming | Hollowmere Threat | Cindralis Report | Pale Grove ]
New Area Unlocked: Dimming Wilds (Pathway Requires: Seelie Alignment)]
Kaiden raised a brow. “Looks like the mainline just opened up again.”
Naō leaned in. “Yeah, same for me. It's even opened up other quest opportunities, check it out.”
Kaiden nodded. He also checked his side quest list. Liri's quest was at the top:
[Side Quest Active: Child of the Bloom, Escort Liri to the Unseelie Court]
Warning. Seelie Patrols May Aggro on Sight.]
He grimaced. “Figures. The more we help her, the more the system paints a target on our backs.”
[Message Received: Ironstride]
He opened it immediately:
“Managed to get an update from Mixmaster after your jail break. Talked with a scout who claimed they saw CrimsonCrow heading toward the southern edge of the Dimming Wilds. It's in the Seelie zone. So, the problem is, players with Unseelie-tagged quests or NPCs may be flagged on entry unless they use alternate access routes. I’ll meet you there soon.”
Kaiden turned to Naō. “Guess you already know. The lead found Crow near the Wilds.”
Naō nodded. “Yep, all while going through Seelie territory, that we just raided, while babysitting a marked NPC that we stole from and hoping no Seelie patrols see us?”
“Pretty much.” Kaiden grinned.
“The game’s always a time when I’m with you,” Naō laughed. “Crazy time, but I'm never bored.”
Liri stirred slightly. The HUD flickered.
[Follower Trait Update: Resonance Pulse: Liri senses Unseelie-aligned paths nearby]
Kaiden's brow rose. “She might be our compass for avoiding Seelie groups.”
Naō opened the map. “The Dimming Wilds are huge. Do we wanna travel during nightfall? Less visibility. Less aggro from monsters.”
“Nah, that also means less experience too. Yeah, we get some during Twilight and Nocturnal hours, but plants are most active and dangerous in the Day. We'll need all the experience we can get.”
Naō shrugged. “Alright, sounds good.”
Kaiden’s HUD pinged again.
[Photosphere Update Applied]: Effect: Root Damage Bonus +10% vs. Mutated Flora | Critical Hits May Trigger critical hit bonus
He stared at the expanding black flower of the Photosphere Skill tree in the corner of his screen.
“Feels like everything’s accelerating,” he muttered.
Naō nodded. “You think the devs planned it like this? I mean, with your photosphere thing. Doesn’t seem like it’s going against their rules or they would have flagged you, right?"
“I don’t know. It’s like... I’m getting pushed toward something. Even the game doesn’t know what to make of me anymore.”
Naō smirked. “Ghost problems.”
Kaiden chuckled. “Yeah. Ghost problems.”
[Quest Updated: Child of the Bloom]
Next Zone: Bramble Crossings
[Night Travel Recommended]
Escort Route Will Minimize Patrol Detection
Kaiden double-checked his inventory, swapped out his damaged gear, and glanced toward the inn window. Beyond it, a familiar orange hue began to give way to Dusk.
[Environmental Warning: Increased Solar Toxicity – Daytime Status Ending]
[Aggro Detection Radius Reduced | Sporeshield Reactivity Strengthened at Nightfall]
