Chapter 20 — The Room That Was Never Opened

The moment the deafening strike tore through the sky, Takiro knew he had made a mistake.

  What did I just do…?

The sound still echoed in his ears as he ran inside his house, heart pounding. He didn’t stop to think. He didn’t look back. All that mattered was getting away—before the neighbors started asking questions, before anyone decided that Takiro had finally gone insane.

He shut the door behind him and leaned against it, breathing hard.

  Outside, people whispered.

  Inside, everything fell apart.

His wife had seen it all.

Just moments ago, he had been smiling, laughing, walking like a normal man. Then one sudden call. One sudden change. And now this—panic written all over his face, fear he couldn’t hide.

She didn’t understand what had happened. But she understood one thing very clearly:

  Something was terribly wrong.

  Her heart sank.

A wife wasn’t meant to stand only in moments of happiness. She was meant to stand beside him in the worst moments too. Especially then.

Maybe… if someone just stood beside him right now—

  Maybe he wouldn’t break.

Takiro had locked himself inside a room.

She walked to the door and slowly opened it.

The look in his eyes stopped her.

  Don’t come closer.

  Don’t enter.

  Leave me alone.

He didn’t say it out loud.

  He didn’t need to.

  That single glance carried everything.

For a moment, doubt crept into her heart.

  But she pushed it aside.

  If not now… then when?

  She walked in anyway.

  She sat beside Takiro.

  Gently took his hand.

  And stayed silent.

  No questions.

  No pressure.

  Just presence.

Takiro didn’t know what to do.

All the anger, the fear, the confusion inside him—

  It shattered.

Like throwing a stone at a glass cup.

  Everything broke at once.

For a brief second, it felt like he had come up for air after drowning.

She squeezed his hand and spoke softly.

“Whatever it is… share it with me. I’m always with you.”

  That was all.

  And yet, Takiro froze.

  Should I tell her?

Should I say our family is in danger?

Will she panic? Will I destroy her peace?

  His thoughts spiraled.

Had his name appeared somewhere it shouldn’t have?

  Had his information leaked?

  Was someone watching him?

Or was all of this just his imagination?

  He didn’t know.

  And then—

  A memory surfaced.

  A memory from his childhood.

Back when his father was still alive.

His father was a doctor. One day, a member of a dangerous gang had been injured. When the gang learned that a doctor lived nearby, they tried to force him to treat their man.

But his father had heard the stories.

He knew what kind of people they were.

  So he refused.

  Instead, he called the police.

That night, the gang came for revenge.

They came to destroy the house.

  They came to kill.

His father had grabbed young Takiro’s hand and rushed him into a room.

“Go inside. Lock the door. No matter what you hear—don’t come out.”

  That room.

  His father’s room.

A room Takiro had never entered since.

Before closing the door, his father had said one last thing:

“If I don’t come back… there’s a box inside this room. It belonged to your grandfather. Open it. You’ll find the help you need.”

  Takiro had forgotten.

  Years passed.

  The room stayed locked.

  The memory buried.

  Until now.

As his wife held his hand, that moment connected—past and present merging into one.

Just like his father back then…

  Someone was holding him now.

  Takiro stood up.

  That room…

  Maybe the answers were there.

Maybe understanding his power would make him stronger.

Strong enough to protect his family.

  Strong enough to stop running.

He rushed down the hallway and opened the door to his father’s room.

  Dust filled the air.

A damp, unused smell clung to everything.

This place hadn’t been touched in years.

He pushed aside old sheets, wiped layers of dust away, searching—

  Then he saw it.

  An old box.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

A brilliant light burst forth, flooding the room.

  Takiro stood frozen, eyes wide.

  And with that—
