Visha smiled at the chat and put down her phone as Tanya came back from the restroom. Her friend was red faced and a little unsteady on her feet as she gripped the table for support and slid back into the booth.

Heh, lightweight, Visha mocked silently. Picking up her next glass of soju, that had just begun to make her feel warm and fuzzy, as opposed to Tanya who had only had a few beers and was already on the back foot. She must be topped up on mana if she’s getting drunk this easily, Visha idlily mused.

“Feeling alright, Rodnaya? Did you have too much to drink? Here, eat some more it will clear your head. Say Ahh.”

Tanya squinted at Visha suspiciously, before leaning forward and taking a bit of the karaage they had ordered with their ramen and drinks. Her eyes closing in happiness as the fried food hit her tongue.

After a few more bites and a few more minutes past, Tanya seemed to shake some of the fog from her head and looking directly at her blushed and reached down into her satchel while saying.

“I got something for you, it’s nothing special, just something I thought you might like, and it meets the necessary criteria for the occasion.”

Rolling her eyes at her friend’s choice of words but still feeling happy at the sentiment, Visha was surprised at the object Tanya placed before her. She had been expecting the same brand of chocolates Tanya gave her every year. They were Visha’s favorite after all, but this time it was a bag a some clearly homemade chocolate tied with a braided red thread.

Taking the bag Visha brought it to her nose smelling the rich scent of dark chocolate and coffee even through the bag.

Looking back at her…friend, Visha’s smile turned more tender, and she thanked her.

“Tanya…is this?… Thank you, they look and smell wonderful. I wish I had thought of this, instead of just taking you to dinner.”

Tanya was now flushed red from head to toe and Visha didn’t think it had anything to do with the alcohol. Raising her glass, she gave her more than friend an out.

  “Kanpai!”

  “Kanpai!”

Tanya mimicked, then they both drained their glasses.

Rodnaya (Russian: родна?я, pronounced [r?d?naj?]) is the feminine adjective for "native," "dear," or "own" in Russian, derived from rod (family/lineage). It is used to describe a close female relative (e.g., rodnaya sestra—full sister) or as an intimate, affectionate term of endearment for a beloved woman, similar to "darling" or "soulmate".

Kanpai (乾杯) is the Japanese equivalent of "cheers," literally translating to "empty cup" or "dry cup" (bottoms up). Used at the start of drinking occasions to foster connection and celebration, it signals everyone to clink glasses and take their first sip together.
