chapter 8: Wings of Aviara

The ground beneath their feet felt strangely light, as if the world itself breathed with the wind. The girls stood together before the towering white castle, its enormous feathered wings stretching high along its sides, shining under the soft glow of the sky. Everything around them felt unfamiliar and yet oddly welcoming. White stone pathways curved through gardens shaped like feathers, fountains carved in the form of pigeons spilled crystal water into wide basins, and soft-winged birds glided peacefully between towers and rooftops.

“This place…” Selindra whispered, turning slowly in a circle. “It’s like the whole world was built for pigeons.”

Rina blinked up at the sky where dozens of pigeons circled gracefully. “Or by pigeons.”

The air felt different here. It was lighter, almost electric, as if something unseen drifted through it. The feather necklaces resting against their chests glowed faintly, pulsing with warmth that spread through their bodies.

Zorya placed a hand against her collarbone, feeling the gentle vibration of the feather. “Do you feel that?”

Before anyone could answer, a sudden rush of warmth surged through them.

Selindra gasped as a strange tingling raced down her spine. Azura grabbed the edge of a stone railing as the ground seemed to sway beneath her feet. Rina’s shoulders tensed, her breath catching sharply.

  Something was happening.

The warmth grew stronger, spreading like ripples through their bones. It wasn’t painful, but it was powerful, as if their bodies were waking up to something ancient and hidden.

“Uh… guys?” Rina muttered nervously. “My back feels weird.”

A shimmer of pale light flickered behind them.

  Then, suddenly, feathers burst outward.

Large wings unfolded from their backs in soft waves of white, blue, and violet feathers. The colors shifted gently in the light, almost like the iridescent sheen of pigeon feathers. The girls froze in stunned silence as the wings stretched outward, catching the breeze.

Selindra’s eyes went wide. “We have wings.”

Rina twisted awkwardly to look behind herself and nearly lost her balance. “WE HAVE WINGS.”

Azura stared at hers with intense focus, flexing them slightly. The feathers rustled with a soft whispering sound.

“This… makes sense,” she murmured thoughtfully.

Rina blinked at her. “How does this make sense?!”

Azura gestured around them. “Look at this place. Everything is pigeon-themed. Architecture, statues, fountains, gardens. The necklaces brought us here. Clearly we’ve been given abilities connected to this world.”

Zorya slowly lifted her wings, feeling how naturally they moved with her body. It felt strange… but also right.

“I think we can fly,” she said quietly.

  “Fly?” Selindra squeaked.

Before anyone could argue, a powerful gust of wind swept across the courtyard. Instinctively, Zorya spread her wings wider.

  The air caught beneath them.

Suddenly she lifted several feet into the air.

  “ZORYA!” Rina shouted.

  But Zorya wasn’t falling.

She hovered there, wide-eyed, feeling the wind curl beneath her feathers. Something inside her mind clicked into place, like a memory she had always had but never noticed.

  Flying felt… natural.

“Okay,” she said slowly. “That’s actually amazing.”

Selindra stared at her, half horrified and half amazed. “You’re floating!”

  “I’m flying.”

Rina grinned suddenly. “Alright. My turn.”

She crouched slightly and pushed off the ground, flapping her wings hard.

Instead of wobbling, she shot upward like a rocket.

  “WOAH—!”

Rina soared higher than expected before panicking and flapping wildly. Somehow, the strong gusts of wind steadied her instead of knocking her down.

Azura watched carefully, studying the way the wind moved around Rina’s wings.

  “Interesting,” she murmured.

Meanwhile Selindra clutched her necklace nervously. “I don’t think I’m mentally prepared for this.”

A pigeon landed on the fountain nearby, tilting its head at her.

  Co-coo.

  Selindra blinked.

  “…Hello?” she said uncertainly.

  The pigeon puffed its chest.

  The strangest thing happened.

Instead of hearing random cooing sounds, Selindra suddenly understood the meaning behind them.

  New wings. New sky. Welcome.

  Her jaw dropped.

  “You can talk?” she gasped.

The pigeon flapped its wings proudly.

  Of course.

Selindra spun toward the others in shock. “GUYS. I CAN UNDERSTAND PIGEONS.”

Rina swooped down and landed beside her. “You WHAT?”

  “They’re talking!”

  Azura raised an eyebrow.

“That explains the communication structures of this world,” she said thoughtfully.

Meanwhile Zorya slowly drifted back to the ground. Her eyes scanned the horizon instinctively. Even though they had just arrived, something strange had happened in her mind.

She knew exactly where they were.

The castle. The courtyard. The direction of the city beyond the walls.

Even the sky pathways above them.

It felt like a map had quietly appeared inside her thoughts.

“I think I know where everything is,” she said slowly.

Rina blinked at her. “We’ve been here five minutes.”

“I know. But… I can feel the directions.”

  Azura’s eyes lit with curiosity.

“That must be a navigational instinct. Pigeons are famous for never getting lost.”

She glanced at each of them carefully, analyzing.

“The necklaces didn’t just bring us here. They enhanced us.”

  She pointed toward Rina.

“You clearly have the strongest wings.”

Rina flexed them proudly. “Not gonna lie, they feel awesome.”

  Azura nodded toward Zorya.

“You have the best sense of direction.”

  Then she turned toward Selindra.

  “You can communicate with pigeons.”

Selindra grinned nervously as another bird landed beside her.

  Finally Azura folded her arms.

“And I appear to be thinking much faster than usual.”

Rina smirked. “So you’re the brain of the group.”

  Azura didn’t deny it.

Above them, pigeons circled gracefully through the sky, their wings flashing silver and violet under the light.

For the first time since arriving, the girls truly looked around.

  This world wasn’t just strange.

  It was alive.

Wind currents carried birds through the air like invisible roads. Feather-shaped trees rustled softly. Tall towers rose in elegant spirals designed for flight rather than stairs.

This was a world built for the sky.

And somehow… they now belonged to it.

Zorya spread her wings again, a small smile forming.

“I think we’re supposed to be here.”

  Rina cracked her knuckles.

“Well then,” she said, glancing toward the massive winged castle.

“Let’s see what Pigeon World has waiting for us.” ???

The courtyard stretched endlessly beneath a pale sky, curving into feather-shaped gardens and marble pathways that gleamed like ivory under the soft sunlight. Towers spiraled skyward like elegant fingers, their rooftops curling into arches reminiscent of wings. Flocks of pigeons circled above, their wings glinting silver, violet, and soft blue, gliding effortlessly along invisible currents of wind.

The girls had barely stepped onto the main path when the world seemed to hum with an energy they could feel through their feathers. Their necklaces pulsed faintly, warming their chests and vibrating softly as though the air itself acknowledged their presence.

Rina, still taking in the massive expanse, rounded a corner too quickly—bump!

She collided with someone, sending both of them stumbling back.

“Hey—watch where you’re—” Rina began, rubbing her shoulder, but she stopped mid-sentence.

The girl she had bumped into steadied herself with a grace that made even the casual balance of pigeons seem clumsy in comparison. Large wings, shimmering in shades of white, pale blue, and violet, flexed behind her. They caught the light in a way that made them appear almost iridescent. Her clothing flowed like soft layers of feathers, decorated with delicate silver patterns tracing arcs of wings and clouds. Atop her silver-blue hair rested a delicate crown shaped like interlaced feathers. Every detail spoke of elegance, authority, and the sky itself.

  The girls froze.

“You’re not from here,” the girl said calmly, her sharp eyes scanning each of them carefully.

Selindra blinked. “Uh… what gave it away?”

The girl tilted her head, wings flexing minutely, her gaze appraising the awkward stance of their new wings and the way they had just landed.

“For one thing,” she said, a faint smile teasing the edges of her lips, “people from Aviara usually don’t crash into strangers in the courtyard.”

Rina puffed out her chest. “Hey! I landed fine!”

Azura muttered under her breath, shaking her head. “You really can tell immediately…”

The girl’s laugh was soft, airy, like wind skimming across water. “My name is… Lunara.” She straightened, folding her wings neatly behind her, every movement controlled and elegant. “Princess of Aviara, the Kingdom of Wings.”

  Selindra’s jaw dropped slightly. “Princess…?”

Rina blinked, trying to straighten herself. “Uh… hi. Your… birdness?”

Azura pinched the bridge of her nose, trying not to laugh.

Lunara smiled faintly, her expression carrying centuries of calm and wisdom, yet approachable and warm. Her eyes then fell on the glowing necklaces around the girls’ necks. The feathers pulsed, faintly vibrating with life.

Her calm demeanor shifted ever so slightly as her eyes widened.

“The Sky Feathers…” she murmured, almost to herself, voice soft yet threaded with astonishment.

Zorya stepped forward. “You… know what these are?”

Lunara studied them carefully. “No one has seen these necklaces in centuries. They select only the capable—those who can rise above themselves and face challenges beyond imagination. And now…” Her gaze lingered on Zorya, calculating, measuring. “…they have chosen you.”

Rina’s eyes widened. “Chosen us? Why?”

Lunara tilted her head, wings flexing lightly. “That is not for me to say. But I can tell you this: the Sky Feathers are ancient and alive. They call to those who are meant to rise above the ordinary world and learn the ways of Aviara. Now that you are here, you have a path before you—one of discovery, growth, and challenge.”

Selindra’s fingers brushed her necklace unconsciously, feeling the warmth and hum that had guided them here. “Challenge?” she whispered.

“Yes,” Lunara said firmly. “The sky is beautiful, but it is not always safe. You must learn to fly, to read the winds, to understand our people and our language. Only then can you navigate Aviara without falling prey to its dangers.”

The girls looked around in awe. Every fountain, garden, and tower had been designed for flight. Pigeons glided along invisible currents that made paths across the sky, their silver-blue feathers shimmering in sunlight. Even the trees appeared shaped to guide flight, branches twisting in arcs that mimicked the natural curve of wings in motion.

Zorya’s gaze swept across the courtyard, her mind already mapping routes, landmarks, and currents. “I think… I can feel the directions,” she murmured. “Like a map forming in my mind.”

“Impressive,” Lunara said softly. “You already sense the skies. That is rare for newcomers.”

Before the others could process her words, a blur zipped past them—a streak of movement that startled everyone.

  “Ahh—!” Selindra shrieked.

“Gotcha!” a voice shouted, spinning through the air. It was Niki, darting between them with a wild grin, wings flashing in brilliant white, blue, and violet. “You should see this place! It’s insane!”

Rina blinked, staring at her friend hovering above the fountain. “Niki! You scared us half to death!”

Niki landed lightly on the edge, wings folding neatly behind her. “I know, I know, but I had to get your attention! This place is unbelievable!”

Azura raised an eyebrow. “Five minutes in and you’re already… flying around like a native?”

“Exactly!” Niki exclaimed. “I touched the necklace, and boom—I can understand pigeons, I can fly, and I already know my way around! Lunara even showed me some of the towers and paths. It’s amazing. I feel like I belong here.”

  Selindra’s jaw dropped. “Five… minutes?”

“Yep! And the pigeons talk. I mean really talk! They give directions, advice, even warnings. I’ve already gotten three messages from the local flocks.”

Lunara’s eyes softened, a hint of amusement on her face. “You adapt quickly. That is… unusual.”

Niki spun in a midair loop, wings catching sunlight. “Unusual? Nah. I’m a natural! You guys just need to try it and you’ll see. The air here… it’s alive. It carries you. It lifts you. Once you get it, you’ll never want to stop flying.”

Selindra laughed, unable to hold back, while Rina flapped her wings nervously. “I just need five minutes not to panic about falling!”

Niki grinned. “Don’t worry! I’ll guide you. Trust me—flying is easier than walking once you get the hang of it!”

Lunara turned toward the castle behind them, her wings glinting in the sunlight. “Come,” she said. “There is much to learn. Aviara welcomes you, but it tests all who enter its skies.”

With that, Niki shot upward, twirling among the hovering pigeons. “Follow me!” she called gleefully.

One by one, the girls spread their wings, lifting off the marble pathways and joining Niki in the air. The wind tugged at them, the currents guiding and supporting, carrying them gently at first and then faster, higher, until they were soaring alongside flocks of pigeons.

The kingdom below stretched endlessly, towers and gardens spiraling like ribbons into the distance. Every fountain shimmered like crystal, every feather-shaped path seemed to invite exploration, every bird seemed to coo encouragement.

In less than five minutes, Niki had become a whirlwind of energy, yapping excitedly about everything she had seen and discovered. The girls laughed, flapped, and rose higher, following her lead, their fear gradually replaced by exhilaration.

Lunara watched them from the castle steps, calm and observant, as the new visitors became part of her kingdom’s sky. The wind carried the sound of Niki’s laughter, mingling with the soft coos of pigeons, and the sun glinted off wings of every color, marking the beginning of their adventure in Aviara, the Kingdom of Wings.
