Darkness

Nerezza was on the boarder of done. How the Hell were they supposed to do anything if he wouldn’t talk to her?

“Just lay back.” She breathed having Reem cushioned his head on a pillow.

“Will it hurt?” Reem asked nerves in his voice as she drew the runes of her previous life. Nerezza considered.

“It’s not painful but it might be a little scary.” She explained. Reem nodded though he still looked nervous. Showl ducked through the door as she was finishing the last few runes. He came up next to her standing close enough that she should be able to communicate with him but she didn’t trust he’d stay long enough for anything.

“Is this something you can teach me?” He asked. Nerezza put her irritation to the side and thought it through.

“You would have to go through a few smaller awakening but yes.” Nerezza admitted. Showl flinched and looked at her confused. She chuckled. “Magic was different in my previous life, it works mostly the same but.” She sucked in a breath and held Reem’s nervous eyes brushing his hair back. “Well, you’ll see.” She sighed.

She settled into her comfortable darkness and the lights dimmed and cooled and magic built up around her dark, pure, terrifying and destructive held back by just her will.

Showl jolted looking around because it wasn’t unstable like the dark methods of this world. It was controlled and focused. It was ill wish, it was curses, it was hatred, pain, fear, and it was hers.

“Hold Reem’s hand if I do it it’ll feel like the fear.” She offered quietly, calmly. The shadows in Reem were not hers but they still answered when she called. Reem shook looking around the room and then looked to his father who knelt holding his hand. He murmured softly to Reem as Nerezza held her hands over him not touching him but making a connection with their magics.

She took in a breath and started to sing. She’d gotten the idea of how to manifest her magic from one of her mother’s harem, but she’d chosen it fully because of the ease she’d felt as her Mama stroked her hair and sang to her. The first person in her lives who showed her so much love. The song was like most of her magic in the language only she understood. The shadows surrounded her hands and she picked apart the more tangled she pulled away what didn’t belong and gave what did some of the supplemented magic. She work as much as the little body could handle before she sealed the magic back in converting the negative intentions and reclaiming them.

Until he filled in the gaps he’d be a bit more prone to colds and chills, but he’d have room to grow his own defenses. He’d start to feel lighter. She released the magic circle and let it all condense into her and for a moment she had the fear that she resembled how her mother looked in her eyes too Reem.

Reem looked at her and she waited frozen. Reem sat up tears bubbling down his apple cheeks and held out his arms. She stumbled forward and lifted him close to her rocking him and murmuring every reassurance she’d wished for as a child. Soon his head was laying on her shoulder.

“Would sing for ma again?” He asked. Nerezza blinked then sang the song Mama had when she’d woken with the nightmares from her previous life that haunted her sometimes.

Nerezza looked at the boy and had a thought she’d never thought of before. She hoped she could give the love her Mama had but be as obstinate in existing as her mother. She thought if she could balance the two she could give these three boys the affection they deserved. Reem fell asleep in her arms and she realized tears were trailing down her own cheeks.

She wondered when they started. She felt arms wrap around her from behind and a face pressed into her neck reminding her of her anger.

“I thought you were avoiding me.” She offered coldly. Nerezza felt him stiffed and he was silent. She scuffed and pulled away from him she turned and met his eyes.

“Don’t for long. I’m not someone who is willing to give effort that isn’t given back.” She warned before turned and carrying Reem to his room.
