Idalia pushed herself up on shaking forelegs.
She wanted to crumble so badly. Collapse and rest! Her vision swam, red bleeding into black at the edges, but one thing remained perfectly clear. It wasn't that the crater smoked around her. That the stone hissed and cracked beneath the residual heat of torn space.
It was further ahead. There was Cheyin. She lay half-buried in fractured stone, breathing shallowly. It should have been a harrowing sight to witness the woman in such a bruised state.
But when Idalia attempted a step forward, one of Cheyin's arms twitched as if trying to move and failing. And yet, when Cheyin's eyes met Idalia's, she smiled. It was crooked. Proud. Unafraid.
That smile snapped something deep inside.
Hands. Summon. Threat.
Idalia's pupils narrowed until the world shrank to a single point. Her breath came slow and heavy, each inhale scraping her chest raw. The ground beneath her claws began to sink, crushed by pressure that had nothing to do with gravity.
Her heartbeat thundered.
{Heart's BPM: 1000 → 1500}
Her breath steamed black and orange. The air around her warped.
She stalked forward, step by deliberate step, tail rigid, fur standing on end. Her thoughts slipped, one by one, like stones dropping into a deep well.
Why was she here?
Why was this fight happening?
Those questions slid away, unimportant, meaningless.
All that mattered was the thing in front of her that was still smiling. Still dangerous.
Cheyin tried to speak. The sound barely made it past her throat. "You… did… well…"
Idalia did not hear praise.
She heard challenge.
She forgot the sanctum. Forgot the spectators. Forgot the laughter, the praise, the rules. The word duel slipped free of her mind like something unimportant, something small.
All that remained was the urge to end the thing in front of her.
Her maw opened slowly. Space bent inward, folding, condensing. A sphere of nothingness began to form, edges screaming softly as they erased light itself.
{Portal Sphere: Charging}
A translucent warning flared across her vision, sharp and invasive.

Idalia's body trembled. She tried to stop, her claws digging deep enough to gouge bedrock.
Somewhere, deep beneath the rage, a distant part of her recoiled. Something frightened as muscles locked and rebelled against her will.

The {Portal Sphere} swelled, growing heavier, denser, impossibly hungry. Gravity twisted around it, tugging at Cheyin's loose hair, at broken stone, at the air itself.
Idalia's thoughts fractured.
This was not a duel anymore.
This was execution.
Her jaws spread wider.
"No," she whispered, voice cracking.
She did not know who she was saying it to.
Her claws gouged deeper into the stone as she fought herself, breath hitching, vision blurring. She could feel herself slipping, feel the edges of who she was burning away.

"I… I don't want… that," she choked.
The sphere expanded again, vast enough now to swallow the arena whole.
"Ida!" Kelix's voice cut through the distortion.
"Idalia!" Rhaya cried. "Stop!"
But… Beyond the dome's wall, one figure watched with open fascination.
Vestella.

The world blurred. Sound warped. Warnings stacked atop warnings as Idalia braced to fire the {Portal Sphere}.
Cheyin held her gaze. She was not afraid.
Then something grabbed Idalia's scruff.
Firm. Absolute.
With a sharp tug, she was lifted clean off the ground.
The {Portal Sphere} collapsed instantly, snapping shut with a violent pop. Reality rebounded as Idalia yelped, legs kicking uselessly while she dangled in midair, heart hammering, mind reeling.
A familiar voice rumbled above her, deep and steady.
"Idalia."
Slowly, trembling, she lifted her head.
There in her sight. A golden mane. A scarred snout. Eyes that had watched over her entire world.
"Pa… pa…?" Her voice came out small. Broken.
He hummed, just like he used to when she couldn't sleep after bad dreams. "That's my name, yes. And you are squeezing it like you're about to break something."
Her heartbeat stuttered. The air stopped screaming. The dark pressure evaporated as if it had never existed.
Her claws sheathed as memory rushed back in a painful flood.
The sanctum. The duel. Cheyin's laughter. The arguing beasts. The fun. The thrill.
This was supposed to be friendly.
Her breath hitched violently as the realization crashed down on her.
Papa Solrift held her exactly as he had when she was a cub, jaws firm but gentle at the scruff of her neck. The same grip that had stopped her from charging lava flows. The same grip that had pulled her out of trouble she thought she could handle.
"You have gone far enough," he said.
The words shattered her.
Idalia's composure collapsed completely. The fury drained out of her like a ruptured dam, replaced by something raw and aching. She sobbed, the sound tearing out of her chest as her body shook violently.

"I thought you were gone," she cried, burying her face against his chest as he lowered her to the ground but did not release her. "I thought… I thought they took you forever…"
Papa Solrift loosened his grip just enough to press his snout to hers.
"I was taken," he said. "But not lost."
Idalia clung to him, pressing her head into his mane as if afraid he might vanish again. Her sobs came in great, ugly waves, many moons of fear and confusion pouring out all at once.
"I didn't want to hurt her," she gasped. "I forgot. I almost…"
"I know," Papa Solrift said, his voice steady, grounding. "I felt it."
He leaned down until their foreheads touched, just like when she was small and trembling after her first failed roar.
"That happens," he said. "Power does that. It whispers that you are alone, that nothing else matters. That is the lie."
She cried harder at that.
Around them, the sanctum was silent. The monstrous storm that had nearly ended her foe curled inward, reduced to a shaking daughter clinging to her father.
Papa finally lifted his head and looked toward Cheyin. His gaze was sharp and assessing.
"She carries more than she understands," he said. "Be glad she chose to stop."
Idalia sniffed, wiping her face against his mane without shame.
"I was so scared," she whispered. "I didn't want to become something I couldn't come back from."
Papa lowered his head again, resting his chin gently atop hers.
"And you did not," he said. "That is what matters."
For the second time in her life, Idalia cried like a child. Yet this time… she had her Papa.
