Chapter 49

When he got back Bev stepped out of the kitchen, and slumped in a chair in relief.

“You don’t plan to cook? You know I ran across half the city to get this.” Kennon said.

Bev smiled weakly and said, “We both know you wouldn’t let me cook if I wanted to.”

Kennon chuckled. And threw his plunder on the table. Bev’s eyes brightened at the sight of food, dishes, utensils. Everything a kitchen needed.

While Kennon got to work cooking them some cheese omelets bev said, “The stasis pantry is fixed, as is the stove and all the lights. Including the alarm lights.”

Kennon smiled. He already knew the stove was fixed, since he was using it. But that was a lot of work for a few hours.

In minutes they had full bellies, and several dirty dishes. Kennon said, “So, next step is the sink?”

  Bev just laughed.

“Seriously though.” Kennon said,”What do we do next? We have plenty of money. We could live like this for months.”

Bev sighed, “The first thing I need to do is fix this place up. There is a lot you could help with actually. After that, a part of me just wants to sleep.”

Kennon understood that sentiment. The last two months had been insane. They were alone in a new city. They just bought a home. They had money. There was no reason to keep that crazy pace. Then he looked back at a notification he had almost forgotten.

Level ten reached. Secondary classes and professions available.

All options are available. But based on your previous choices the following are suggested.

  Class

  Spell blade

  Far caster

  Mage adept

  Shadow caster

  Profession

  N/A

He pulled up the class descriptions

  Spell blade

Warrior mage hybrid. Focuses on quick and nimble casting of inscribed spells in conjunction with blade work.

  Far caster

Scout mage hybrid. Focuses on spotting enemies from afar and destroying them before they get close.

This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

  Mage adept

Mage focus. Focus purely on the arcane arts. Be it close or far. Weak or strong. All will fall to your spells.

  Shadow caster

Scout mage hybrid. Focuses on destroying your enemies without a trace. Be it with blade or spell.

Well. he understood why all of these were suggested. And the closest to what he had been doing so far was spell blade. But that was a path he was forced into. What he wanted was clear

  Mage adept selected.

  Suggested skills adjusted.

New magic paths available through Tutor.

“Well,” he said, “I am now a mage adept. No professions suggested. How hard would it be to enchant me a staff that could hold multiple fireballs?”

Bev smiled, light returning to her eyes. They unfocused for a few minutes, then she said, “for a tank with the armorer profession pretty easy. I will need materials.”

  “That will cost money.”

“I can make things to sell.”

  “That takes materials.”

“We have enough startup. So, what did you find on your trip? Where should we visit next?”

They went to the nearest metal merchant and bought ten gold worth of mana enriched steel. A proper T1 metal. They also spent some of that on T1 wood, and other basic supplies. It physically hurt spending so much money. But with the amount of metal they got Bev was certain they could turn a profit.

Next they went to a glass ware shop and purchased several things Kennon would need for proper alchemy. They also asked for advice on what was selling well.

“Your master will help you with that. Just follow their advice.”

  “I don’t have a master.”

“Then get one. You can’t make a profit from alchemy as a novice.”

Kennon tried to push for a straight answer. But no matter how hard he tried, or who he asked he always got the same answer. In the end he decided to buy several ingredients for common potions. He would have to find a way around the master problem later. With Tutor he didn’t need a master. But Tutor would not be telling him market trends.

Of course the best way to make money would be to hunt beasts. But they didn’t even think about that option for the moment. Their flight from Colville was still too recent. Too sore.

They were back at their house. Bev had set up all her equipment on the ground of the pad. She opened Tutor and said,

“Ok Tutor, sorry I was gone so long. It is time to get back to work. I checked the rune library. And I settled on a design for scout worthy daggers. I plan to make a few dozen of these so please tell me when I make a mistake.”

That’s my job, Happy to help! What is the design?

“The daggers will be barely twenty centimeters long in the blade. Focused on cutting with a wide one sided blade. Almost like a knife. But instead of the basic sharpness, durability, self repair enchants I want something a little more exotic. I doubt many people here will be selling sonic daggers. On making contact they will unleash a sonic attack focused in the direction of the cut. The force will be decided by the amount of mana they input“

That is an intriguing design. And you are right that it will interfere with many other common enchants. At least with the mana enriched steel I see you purchased. Additional enchantments would greatly reduce the amount of mana it could store. And since you intend to sell them reduced durability is hardly a problem

Bev laughed at the last line. She wasn’t going to be the type of person that intentionally made equipment that broke faster so she could sell more. But durability and self repair would reduce the potential strength of the sonic attack by two thirds.

They could buy an ordinary dagger if they wanted one.

As this will be your first time with the hybrid enchanter/blacksmith profession I will guide you in the smithing as well. I see it will also be your first time using metal mold. So we will start with the peculiarities it introduces to the forging process.
