Paws of Redemption

In a quiet shelter on the edge of town, two dogs waited. Storm, a gentle black coat and rust coloured socks with matching eyebrow dots German Shepard with soulful eyes, and Dream, a small brown Pit Bull with a white blaze resting at the top of her forehead and cautious heart, shared a kennel and a longing for something more—a forever home.

Both bore scars from their pasts. Dream flinched at sudden movements, memories of harsh words and raised hands haunting her dreams. Storm, once chained in a backyard, barked at strangers, unsure if kindness was real. Yet, together, they found comfort in each other’s presence, curling up close on cold nights, sharing warmth and hope.

Unbeknownst to them, two people visited the shelter every week. Soteria and Priam, a couple seeking to make amends to wounds, had once made mistakes—driven by anger, fear, and ignorance, they’d hurt those they loved, including animals. Years of regret weighed on them, but they’d changed, dedicating time to volunteering, learning, and making amends.

One rainy afternoon, Soteria knelt by Storm and Dream’s kennel with an outstretched hand. She spoke softly, her voice trembling with self-condemnation. “We’re not any means of perfect, but we want to try. Will you give us a chance?” Priam stood beside her, eyes shining with hope and remorse.

Storm approached first, bearing her canines and snarling as she stood in front of Dream in a form of protecting her. Keeping her hand there Storm gradually ever so slowly crept forward teeth still allowing themselves to show-still snarling. Storm now 5 inches away from Soteria's hand sniffs-but no snarling. 4 inches away sniffs-but no teeth. 3 inches away-but with an impassive look. 2 inches away-Dream takes the premeditated sniff Dream's butt tucked, and slight tail wagging followed. Soteria’s eyes welled up with glee as Dream sniffs and licks her hand. In that moment, something shifted inside Storm—a silent passing of between humans and dogs. They were all searching for for a place to belong in each other's world.

"Priam, I think we can do this. Let's not do this out of greed for redemption, let's do this for the change we earned and love they deserve." as they reminisce their wrong doings. Priam shudders at the thought of it and whispers, "We can do this." as tears stream his face. The shelter attendant Ambrosa warned the couple of the dogs' past and their behaviour. She insists consistency and pampering but warns them if they regress back to their old ways she'll be there like a bat out of hell on their front door step. "You can for sure count on us Ambrosa-Thank you for allowing and trusting us. We will care and love them as we should've done with our first two." Soteria gravely states. After Ambrosa's nod of approval the adoption papers were signed. Ambrosa kissed Storm's and Dream's heads one last time tears filled with relief and content. "I wish you two the best lives ever- you have beautiful souls." as Ambrosa tearfully and gleefully lets out.

With that Dream and Storm left the shelter behind. Upon boarding the car Priam attempts to lift Dream into the car instinctively, turning her head away-Priam sees this and immediately lays low chin to the ground with his hand up in an attempt to show her he's not a threat. Dream appalled with this gesture lowers her head into his palm and lets out a breath of relief. Upon seeing this Storm reluctantly hops in the back seat of the car looking at Dream letting her know its safe. Priam and Soteria smile at each other as they both get Dream into the car as she then curls up into a ball next to Storm. As they make their way to their new home Dream falls asleep as Storm stares out the window for the first time. As she stares and stares Priam slightly cracks the window allowing Storm to sniff the air-Storm now head out the window enjoying the new smells. Ears flopping. Nose flexing. Tongue hanging out. Slobber getting lost in the wind. Storm then looks into the side view mirror only to see Soteria smiling at her Storm immediately pops her head back in and puts her forearms onto the console and looks at her out of curiosity. She sniffs her and whines-Confused Soteria and Priam give each an estranged look until it hits them at she has to pee. Immediately Priam pulls over on the sandy road to let Storm relieve herself and she takes the opportunity to sniff the sand and rocks and the dryness in the air she sniffs and sniffs until she comes across a plant she finds unfamiliar. Before Soteria can warn Storm she then has a needle pierced through her nose. Priam simultaneously searches for the nearest pet store which is nearly 3 miles away which he sighs with relief. Soteria scoops Storm up and gets in the back seat with her while Priam puts Dream in the front passenger seat as she drifts back to sleep. Upon arriving they gather tweezers and antibiotics as Priam works the tweezers Soteria massages Storm's ears and tenderly lets her know they want to help and that's she's going to be safe and sound while they're around. 3 minutes passes and now the needle is out Priam rubs the ointment on Storm's nose and blows on it as she wags her tail before giving a tiny nudge with her head. Now back in the car Storm takes a break from sniffing and lies down in the back seat and drifts off to sleep wagging her tail.

At last, they are finally in their new home, Dream and Storm sniffs around every crack and crevice except for one room until they both hear something. Running water. Dream runs to the sound as Storm runs to hide as she's frightened by water. Priam laughs heartily at the sight as he slowly picks Dream up for her first bath. While Dream is being bathed Soteria grabs dry shampoo for dogs as she incorporates the shampoo in her fur Storm closes her eyes and snorts out of comfort which Soteria giggled which sounded like heaven to Storm's ears. As both dogs are bathed and dry now Soteria runs to the unknown room squealing as she runs back with a pink and purple pup jammies-with the jammies on both dogs look at each other with an estranged look before wagging their tails. Now Priam at the unknown door opens it to reveal a pink and purple pup themed room. Two toddler beds, with a beanbag in the corner, closet full of dog treats and more jammies and plenty of toys for them to play with. Adjacent of the closet sits a low sitting pink tv with a plush white rug that lined the area and a floor to ceiling big window with a medium sized dog couch to relax and watch the outdoors. Upon seeing the room tail wags, bed testing and treat giving became of the hour. Approximately 3 weeks passed since adoption day healing was slow but steady. There were setbacks when Dream whimpered in her sleep and days when Storm hid under the bed. But Soteria and Priam offered gentle words, treats, and endless love. They offered what they should've did in the beginning. Something they knew they didn't deserve.

Over time, laughter replaced fear. Walks in the park became adventures. Cuddles on the couch became rituals. Storm and Dream learned to trust again, and Soteria and Priam found redemption in the unconditional love of their new family. Together, they proved that even the deepest wounds could heal, and that everyone who has adequate means of change—human and especially animals deserves a second chance at happiness.
