Chapter 67 - Three Days of Fear

  The Council didn't step aside.

  Of course they didn't.

Councilor Darrin's jaw tightened, his voice thin with barely controlled panic:

"You dare threaten the governing body of this Academy?"

  Alya didn't flinch.

  "I'm stating a fact."

  Ren whispered to Lami,

"She's not even trying to sound threatening. That's what makes it terrifying."

  Lami nodded, eyes wide.

  "She's... calm..."

  Eris muttered,

  "Too calm."

Cael stepped closer to Ayla, shoulder almost touching hers.

Aster Vale—still leaning weakly against the broken pillar—spoke softly:

"She isn't threatening you. She's warning you."

  Darrin glared.

"A warning from a Sealed traitor is meaningless."

  Aster didn't even blink.

"Then listen to the girl who saved your entire east wing."

  The Council murmured.

  Alya's expression didn't change.

  But inside—

  Her chest ached.

  Her blood felt too heavy.

Her mother's death pressed on her like a ghost leaning into her ribs.

  But she held her ground.

  For her friends.

  For Mila.

  For herself.

  The Council Moves Against Her

  Darrin lifted his staff.

  Golden runes ignited.

  "Contain her now."

  Ren shrieked,

  "THE HELL YOU ARE—"

She charged him with precisely the level of decision-making everyone expected from her:

  zero.

Cael grabbed her by the hood as she flew past.

  "Ren—STOP—"

"PUT ME DOWN—THIS IS 'STAND WITH THE MAIN CHARACTER' TIME—"

  But it was too late.

Ten Council enforcers stepped forward, forming a ring around Ayla and her team.

The air thickened with heavy magic.

  Binding spells hummed.

Shackles of golden energy circled the ground.

  Lami squeaked,

  "T-they're using elite containment formations..."

  Eris stepped forward, eyes sharp.

"They're prepared to treat Ayla like a relic."

  Ren snapped,

"She has feelings, you SULTANS OF COWARDICE—"

  Alya raised her hand slightly.

  "Stop."

  Her voice wasn't loud.

  But everyone froze.

  Even the Council.

  Alya continued:

"You think you're containing me so you can protect the Academy."

  Her eyes darkened.

"But all you're doing is pushing the Seal closer to choosing someone else."

  The courtyard wavered.

Because they all knew she was right.

Mila whimpered from her stretcher—her glow fluctuating dangerously.

  Eris snapped toward the healers,

  "She's destabilizing again—watch her!"

  Cael hissed,

"We don't have time for this."

Aster Vale pushed himself upright with effort.

"The Fifth Seal is circling the Academy. The moment Ayla is restrained, it will attach to the next strongest unstable vessel."

  Ren's face fell.

  "Mila."

  Lami whispered,

  "No... not again..."

The glow around Mila pulsed indignantly—

  like a heartbeat skipping.

  Alya clenched her fists.

  "You restrain me—

  Mila dies."

  Darrin froze.

The other Councilors exchanged horrified looks.

  Aster continued, voice grim:

  "Or worse—

the Seal may jump to someone even more fragile."

  Cael's face shadowed.

  "Rian."

  Alya shook her head.

  "No.

  Someone inside the Academy."

  Everyone turned toward her.

  Ren asked,

  "Who?!"

  Alya whispered:

"Whoever the Academy has hidden in the Binding Hall."

  Aster's expression shifted—painful, knowing.

  "Alya..."

  She turned toward the Council.

  "Tell them."

  Darrin stiffened.

  "We will not—"

  "Tell them," Ayla repeated softly.

  Ren looked between them.

"What is it? What are they hiding now??"

  Aster Vale exhaled.

"There is a student in the Binding Hall...

one born with a resonance so unstable, the Academy hid their existence entirely."

  Cael's eyes widened.

  "You knew?"

  Aster nodded sadly.

  "But Ayla wasn't supposed to."

  Ren shrieked,

"STOP WITH THE SECRETS AND JUST SAY THE NAME—"

  Aster closed his eyes.

  "The student's name is Lune."

  Eris froze.

"...Lune? The rumor? I thought that was a myth."

  Lami whispered, terrified,

"I heard she made three instructors lose consciousness just by crying..."

  Alya inhaled sharply.

"The Seal will go to her next."

  Darrin stepped back in horror.

"No—no—she is too unstable—if she bonds with a Seal, she'll—"

  "Explode," Aster finished quietly.

  Ren screamed,

"HEY. GREAT. AMAZING. SO MANY OPTIONS. ALL OF THEM BAD—"

  Alya raised her voice—finally, fully:

  "You try to contain me,

the Seal will bond to Mila or Lune.

  And both will die."

  The Council fell silent.

  Alya stared at them, steady.

  "So stop chasing control.

And start helping me protect the people you're supposed to care about."

  The runes around her flickered—

  not from her magic—

  but from the Council's hesitation.

  Ren whispered,

  "She's winning."

  Cael nodded, grateful but tense.

Eris crossed her arms, smirking slightly.

"They finally learned fear has a cost."

  The Council murmured frantically.

  Finally, Darrin lowered his staff.

  "...Fine."

  Ren gasped,

  "Wait—WHAT—DID WE JUST WIN?!"

  Darrin continued reluctantly:

"We will suspend containment—for three days."

  Alya exhaled shakily.

  Aster whispered to her:

  "They just started to understand."

  But Darrin added sharply:

  "If the Seal returns—

  and you lose control—

  we will not hesitate."

  Alya didn't blink.

  "I'll never lose control."

Darrin stared at her one last time.

  Then turned away.

  "Three days, Ayla Whitlock.

  Prove you aren't the storm."

  After the Council Leaves

  The courtyard emptied.

Only Ayla, her friends, Aster, and a few healers remained.

  Mila slept fitfully, glowing dangerously.

  Lami tended to her gently.

Cael kept watch at Ayla's side.

Eris stood at the edge of the ruined tower, calculating next steps.

Ren sat cross-legged on a fallen beam, staring at Ayla.

  She finally said, softly:

  "...Are you okay?"

  Alya swallowed.

For the first time since her mother's death—

  since Mila nearly exploded—

  since Rian arrived—

  since the Seal fled—

  Alya let the truth out.

  "No."

  Ren's eyes softened immediately.

Lami looked up at her with sympathy.

Eris turned her head slightly, listening.

Cael's hand hovered near her shoulder, hesitant but present.

  Alya whispered:

"I don't know if I can do this."

  Cael answered instantly.

  "You can."

  Eris's voice followed.

  "You will."

  Lami nodded.

  "We'll help..."

  Ren leaned in close.

"And if the Seal picks someone else,

we'll punch destiny in the face."

Alya let out a broken laugh.

Aster stepped forward, leaning heavily on his staff.

"You asked earlier what 'becoming nothing' means."

  Alya turned to him.

  Aster's expression was grave.

"It means you could take all five Seals...

  and be unchanged."

  Alya's breath caught.

  "Unchanged?"

  Aster nodded.

  "You wouldn't ascend.

  Wouldn't break.

  Wouldn't be consumed."

He pointed gently at Ayla's chest.

"Something in you neutralizes the Seals."

  Eris inhaled sharply.

  Lami covered her mouth.

  Ren whispered,

  "She... cancels destiny?"

  Aster's eyes warmed.

  "She rewrites it."

  Alya's pulse raced.

  "Why me?"

  Aster smiled faintly.

"Because you're the only one in centuries born with all five roots active at birth."

  Alya froze.

  Cael whispered:

  "Five... roots?"

  Aster nodded.

  "Your mother hid the truth.

  To protect you."

  Alya trembled.

  "What truth?"

  Aster answered softly:

"You weren't born with a Seal.

You were born with all five.

  Dormant."

  Alya staggered.

  Ren screamed,

"WHAT—WHAT DO YOU MEAN—SHE WAS BORN WITH THE DLC INSTALLED—??"

  Eris went pale.

Cael stepped forward quickly, catching Ayla's arm.

  Aster continued:

"The Seals didn't run from you.

They ran toward the one being born holding all their power."

  Alya whispered:

  "I was... their origin?"

  Aster corrected:

  "You are their return."

  Alya's heart stopped.

  Her breath froze.

  "...What am I?"

  Aster didn't hesitate:

  "The true Convergence.

The one the Seals belong to."

  Alya's knees weakened.

Ren and Cael grabbed her at the same time.

Eris stepped closer, eyes wide with something between awe and fear.

  Lami whispered:

"So... the Seal isn't choosing her...

it's just choosing whether she's ready."

  Aster nodded.

  "The Fifth Seal will return."

  Alya swallowed.

  "When?"

  Aster held her gaze.

"At dawn on the third day."

  Alya shivered.

  "And then?"

  Aster answered:

"It will ask you one question."

  Alya's voice shook.

  "...What question?"

  Aster whispered:

"What do you wish the world to become?"

  Alya closed her eyes.

And the world exhaled around her.
