Chapter 85: You Have a Good Sister

Chloe observed the expressions of the two managers from the side, her heart filled with both nervousness and admiration for her sister. If it were her, she would never have dared to say such things.

Faye's expression changed slightly. After so many years in the industry, she had never encountered a situation where the initiative during a newcomer's signing was in the other party's hands. Even though Chloe's potential was outstanding, it wasn't unprecedented.

Wendy, on the other hand, remained smiling from start to finish, not showing any displeasure.

Grace, after showing due courtesy, went straight to the point: "First, both of your contracts explicitly prohibit actors from being in relationships during the contract period. I hope this clause can be removed."

"I understand this clause is likely standard in all companies' contracts for newcomers, but I believe relationships aren't something people can strictly control. Suppressing an actor's natural desires only leads to everyone secretly dating behind the scenes, followed by the company having to handle overwhelming public relations crises."

"I also understand that companies want artists to remain single to maintain fan loyalty. But Chloe only wants to be an actress, not a star. So, I don't want the tactics used for traffic stars to be used to control my sister's freedom, or even her private life."

Faye opened her mouth but couldn't think of how to respond.

Wendy continued to smile and looked at Chloe, asking: "Young lady, you're not already in a relationship, are you?"

Chloe was taken aback, her face immediately turning red: "No, I've never been in a relationship."

Grace also explained: "Saying this doesn't mean my sister will definitely be in a relationship in the future. But I want to ensure she has the right to freely choose to be in one if she wishes."

Wendy raised an eyebrow and nodded: "OK, no problem. I can agree to that."

Faye, however, bit her lip anxiously and remained silent.

Seeing this, Grace continued: "Then the second point is, within three years, Chloe will not play roles that are severely stereotyped or repetitive. We can exchange conditions. As long as the role types don't overlap, Chloe can play small supporting roles. Not playing the lead is fine."

Chloe excitedly nodded in agreement. This point truly struck a chord with her. She wanted to play diverse roles and leave different screen images for the audience.

Wendy thought for a moment and said, "Three years is too long. Two years is acceptable. Because that's the current state of the industry—too many similar scripts. Those costume idol dramas all wear the same skin; dozens come out every year. Truly excellent, good scripts are really not that many."

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

Upon reflection, Grace agreed that Wendy's description was indeed the current reality. Scarlett at the dorm had binge-watched five dramas in a month—three costume idol dramas and two urban ones—all with essentially the same plots with different packaging.

So, Grace nodded and accepted the two-year timeframe.

Faye let out another helpless, soft sigh.

Then they heard Grace continue: "Chloe will not be a regular cast member on variety shows. She's not eloquent and has a shy personality, which isn't suitable for variety shows. But occasionally appearing for drama promotions is acceptable."

"Chloe cannot be required to socialize with investors for the company, especially at private dinner gatherings. Absolutely not!"

Grace listed several additional clauses in one breath, covering things she believed her sister needed and some pitfalls her sister had fallen into in a past life.

It was actually very unreasonable, even somewhat arrogant, for a newcomer to make such demands. Grace was well aware of this.

That's why she didn't let Chloe speak, choosing to be the 'arrogant' one shielding her sister. As long as the terms were agreed upon, Chloe would benefit. She didn't mind.

What surprised Grace was that she had expected to have to bargain over these 'excessive' clauses for several rounds. Instead, Wendy nodded and agreed to every single one from beginning to end.

Looking at Faye, her expression could no longer be described as merely unpleasant.

This was the gap in authority. Wendy could unilaterally decide and finalize this contract without consulting anyone. But Faye couldn't. She didn't have that much power.

So, she stood up and said, "I need to make a phone call."

Leaving the dressing room alone, Faye dialed her boss's number and concisely reported the current situation.

"You saw today's trending topics. Chloe has immense potential. If we can't show more sincerity, I won't be able to sign her today."

Whoever was on the other end of the line said something. Faye's already worried expression grew even more troubled: "I'm competing with Wendy for this person! If you don't give me the authority, how can I possibly compete? Are we just going to hand over such promising talent to 'Golden Joe'?"

"Fine, fine. Anyway, I'm helpless today. Whatever they say, Wendy agrees. I'm just standing there like a wooden post, staring blankly. I can't stand losing face like this!"

With that, Faye angrily hung up the phone.

After taking a few deep breaths to adjust her mood, she returned to the dressing room with a calm expression. She then smiled at Chloe and said, "Chloe, you're a good kid. I genuinely really wanted to sign you. But the conditions your sister brought up today... I truly have limited power and can't agree to them."

"If I forced you to sign, I might not be able to protect you very well within the company later. But it's different with Wendy. You'll have better development following her. I hope we have a chance to work together in the future!"

Chloe's eyes reddened with apology. " Faye... I..."

"No need to apologize," Faye said with a candid smile. "Your personality does make you prone to being taken advantage of. Actually, there's something I've been wanting to apologize to you for. That time at the press conference, I ran into you backstage. When you were left stranded by the staff, I could have helped you. But I didn't. I selfishly wanted you to experience a setback, hoping you'd feel the need for a company to rely on and then sign with me. I'm sorry about that incident."

Listening to Faye's words, tears uncontrollably streamed down Chloe's face. She was just that kind of simple and soft-hearted young girl.

She choked up and said, "It's okay. Even though I've only met you a few times, you've taught me so much..."

Faye was also somewhat moved. She patted Chloe's shoulder, then glanced at Grace and said sincerely: "Thank goodness you're not alone. You have a good sister."

  Chloe nodded through her tears.

"Wendy!" Faye then turned to Wendy, smiling with a mix of helplessness and resignation. "I knew once you showed up, I didn't stand a chance. But it's been quite an interesting experience. Being able to compete with Wendy for talent once is something I could boast about for two years."

Wendy smiled and said, "Don't say that. I understand your difficulties. Your boss has very short-sighted vision. If you ever have the intention to come to 'Golden Joe', I welcome you anytime!"

Hearing this, Faye laughed: "If someone had said that about my boss before, I would have definitely defended him. But today, I completely agree with you, Wendy. He really will... have a day when he regrets this!"

A seemingly serious negotiation ended on such a warm note.

Faye gracefully conceded, knowing the odds were against her. Chloe's management contract successfully ended with 'Golden Joe Media'.
